Illinois Advances Maternal Health: New Protections for Breastfeeding Mothers

Illinois lawmakers have passed significant legislation aimed at supporting maternal health and breastfeeding mothers. Senate Bill 212 mandates that empoyers provide paid breaks for mothers to pump breast for up to one year after childbirth. importantly, the bill prohitbits employers from requiring employees to use other forms of paid leave for this purpose. The legistlation passed the house with a vote of 82-27 and is currently awaiting the governors signature.

In addition to SB 212, the house bill 2688 was also passed, allowing certified nurse midwives to assist with home births, particulary in areas lacking adequate maternal health services. This move aims to address maternity care deserts and improve access to maternal healthcare across the state.

These measures reflect Illinoi’s commitment to enhancing maternal health access and supporting working mothers. If signed into law, they will represent a significant step forward in creating a more supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers in the workplace.
