A quick guide for Labor and Delivery
Giving birth is a wild ride, but knowing what’s coming can calm the nerves. Here’s a small guide to labor, delivery, and the first moments after, packed with tips to help you feel ready.
What Happens During Labor
1. Early and Active Labor
Early: Contractions kick in, mild and spotty (5–20 min apart). Your cervix starts opening (up to 6 cm). Stay home, sip water, breathe deep, take a warm shower or whatever distraction works for you..
Active: Contractions hit harder (3–5 min apart), and your cervix may open to 10 cm. Time to head to the hospital. Epidurals or a birthing ball might be your vibe.
Tip: Lean on your partner or doula to keep you grounded.
2. Pushing and Delivery
Cervix fully open? Time to push. It could take minutes or hours. Crowning stings (yep, the “ring of fire”), but then bam! your baby’s here!
Tip: Try squatting or side lying if your Dr or team is ok with it.
3. Placenta Delivery
A few final pushes, and the placenta can be out in approximately 5–30 min. Your team checks if you’re okay while you soak in that new-baby magic.
Tip: Snuggle your baby for instant bonding and initiate breastfeeding, the breast crawl is an amazing scene to witness.
Natural: Deep breathing, massages, or moving around.
Medical: Some assistance may be needed in the form of an epidural or induction. Talk options with your doula and Dr ahead of time.
Tip: Plan, but roll with whatever feels right.
When Things Don’t Go as Planned
Labor can throw curveballs maybe a long push or a C-section. Trust your team; they’ve got you.
Prep Like a Pro
Hospital Bag: Comfy clothes, snacks, phone charger, baby’s first outfit. I suggest have everything ready by 7 months you just never know how or when labor can happen. You can never be over prepared. You got this.
Support Squad: Your partner or doula’s your hype team.
Mindset: You’re tougher than you think, your body was made for this.
Right After Birth
You’ll be monitored for bleeding while you bond with your baby. Breastfeeding? Nurses can help. You’ll feel all the feels which is totally normal.
